Key Powerwall 3 Features
Integrated Solar Inverter
Powerwall 3 combines battery storage with an integrated solar inverter, allowing compatible solar arrays to connect directly to the Powerwall system.
High Solar Input
The system supports up to 20 kW DC of solar input and provides six MPPTs for solar array management.
Whole-Home Backup Potential
With appropriate backup equipment and system design, Powerwall 3 can provide whole-home or partial-home backup. Actual supported loads depend on the home's electrical design.
Smart Energy Control
The Tesla app provides energy monitoring and controls. Powerwall can be configured for backup protection, energy savings and other operating goals.
Future Expansion: Powerwall 3 Expansion
Powerwall 3 is designed so storage capacity can be increased later. A Powerwall 3 Expansion is an additional storage unit that does not contain its own inverter; it adds battery capacity to a compatible Powerwall 3 system.

13.5 kWh Additional Storage
Each Powerwall 3 Expansion provides 13.5 kWh of nominal battery energy.
Up to 3 Expansion Units
Up to three Expansion units can be connected to the Leader Powerwall 3, allowing up to 40.5 kWh of additional nominal storage.
Maximum System Scale
Tesla supports up to four Powerwall 3 units and up to three Expansion units, for a maximum system size of seven units.
Expansion Is Storage Only
The Expansion unit does not include an inverter. It connects to Powerwall 3 through the approved Expansion Harness and is electrically paralleled with the Powerwall 3 system.
Future-proofing benefit: A homeowner can plan for higher future energy use or longer backup duration without treating the initial battery installation as the final storage capacity. Expansion compatibility depends on the Powerwall 3 unit/version and system design.
Powerwall 3 vs. Expansion: What Is the Difference?
| Powerwall 3 | Powerwall 3 Expansion |
|---|---|
| 13.5 kWh nominal energy | 13.5 kWh nominal additional energy |
| Integrated solar inverter | No inverter — storage only |
| Up to 11.5 kW continuous AC output | Does not provide separate AC output |
| Up to 20 kW DC solar input | Not a solar inverter |
| Can act as the Leader Powerwall | Connects to the Leader Powerwall 3 |
| Core battery + inverter unit | Additional storage for future capacity |
